Welcome to the inaugural edition of Monday Case Management Insights! I’m Brandi, a wife, mom, and seasoned case manager who has been in the field for many rewarding years. I’m passionate about coaching other case managers, traveling, and indulging in delicious cuisine. Today, I want to talk about one of the most common challenges we face in our profession—balancing a heavy case load.
Learning how to prioritize is one of the hardest things to do in case management. I remember when I worked as an acute inpatient case manager, I would often feel overwhelmed by the number of tasks that demanded my attention. However, I discovered a method that significantly helped me manage my workload more effectively.
At the end of each day, I made a list of the most important things I needed to get done the next day. This was my “you cannot leave until these are done” list. It focused primarily on patients who were discharging and those who had just been admitted. For example, I made sure therapy or equipment was set up for someone about to discharge or ensured that mandatory family training or education sessions for recently admitted patients were scheduled and confirmed.
Make it a habit to create a list of priorities for the next day before you leave work. This simple practice ensures that you don’t forget anything crucial and helps you hit the ground running the next morning. Here’s how you can do it:
While having a list is essential, flexibility is equally important. Unexpected situations will always arise, and you need to be able to adapt without losing sight of your priorities.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to not beat myself up if some things are left undone by the end of the day. The nature of our job is such that it will never truly be “finished.” The goal is to tackle the most important tasks and ensure nothing critical is missed.
Leverage technology to streamline your processes. There are numerous case management software options that can help you keep track of tasks, deadlines, and patient information.
Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks when appropriate. Effective delegation can significantly lighten your load and allow you to focus on higher-priority tasks.
Balancing a heavy case load isn’t just about managing tasks; it’s also about managing your well-being. Here are a few additional tips:
Balancing a heavy case load is undoubtedly challenging, but with the right strategies, it’s entirely manageable. By making a priorities list, staying flexible, and being kind to yourself, you can navigate the complexities of case management more effectively.
I hope these insights and tips help you in your journey. Remember, you’re not alone in this. We’re a community of dedicated professionals striving to make a difference, one case at a time.
Happy Monday, and here’s to a productive week ahead!
Warm regards,
Brandi
